Business Counsellor Day School: ColloquiumLEX 8516 Cr. 2 Corequisite/Prerequisite: Coreq.: LEX 8515 Business Counsellor Day School: Internship or concurrent work of at least 150 hours in an approved internship; Prereq./CoreQ. LEX 6800 Professional Liability and Advocacy. Students learn about the content issues that arise in an in-house legal department and the ethical responsibilities of in-house lawyers. A lot of classroom time is spent teaching professional skills on topics such as working with outside lawyers, conflict management, drafting contracts, and conducting internal investigations. Students will also participate in the moderated discussion and analysis of their observations and experiences in the field. Heads of Legal Affairs, General Counsel and Senior Counsel will be speaking at selected courses. Notes: Meets the experiential learning requirement as a clerkship. Limited to 16 participants.

Students at the clinic gain experience and skills and help real clients. Our clinics transform the lives of elderly tenants on the verge of eviction, refugees from global conflicts and unaccompanied immigrant children, as well as members of other underserved groups. Students own their records. They navigate complex legal institutions on behalf of their clients with the personal support of dedicated faculty members. Corporate Legal Counsel: PracticumLEX 8515 Cr. 2Corequisite/Prerequisite: (1) LEX 6800 Professional Liability and Advocacy Corequisite: (1) LEX 8516 Corporate Counsel Externship: Colloquium. Students complete 150 hours of unpaid work at management consulting firms of nonprofit and for-profit institutions for two credits. Students are assigned tasks similar to lawyers in the offices of in-house counsel or general counsel. The internship is an opportunity for students to develop professional skills, including legal analysis and reasoning, contract drafting, problem solving, communication, teamwork, negotiation, and fact-finding.

Students also learn to give and receive important topics in the workplace such as time management, corporate culture, professionalism, and feedback. (FLAC) is a student-run, non-profit organization whose board of directors is comprised entirely of Wayne law students. FLAC partners with legal advocacy organizations to provide free legal services to low-income people in Wayne County. FLAC students practice under the supervision of legal aid attorneys and law schools in accordance with the Michigan Student Practice Rule. Students who work an average of 12 to 14 hours per week are responsible for all aspects of their assigned cases, including interviewing clients, writing briefs and other court records, advocating motions, conducting trials and evidentiary hearings, hearing with opposing counsel, investigation of legal issues and preparation of legal documents. Students attend a seminar course twice a week for this course graded by letter. Credits earned meet experiential learning and clinical training requirements. Notes: Meets professional competency requirements. Registration is limited to 16 students. Invitation to work at the Free Legal Aid Clinic Inc. required by the Board of Directors of this organization.

Open only to students who have completed all required courses in the first year. Students must have a good academic reputation and have a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Preference will be given to graduates and students who have never attended a live client clinic. “Notes for Winter 2023: Classes for this course will be held on Mondays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., from January 9, 2023 to May 1, 2023. Due to public holidays, classes will not take place during the week of January 16. Classes on Monday, February 20, 2023 will instead take place on Tuesday, February 21, 2023. Islamophobia and LEX 8197 Cr. Prerequisites: LEX 6700 Constitutional Law and LEX 6300 Criminal Law This seminar will examine in detail the role of the law in supporting and promoting Islamophobia – the emerging form of hostility commonly understood as hatred or fear of Islam. This seminar will explore a range of doctrinal and policy issues related to the broader phenomenon of Islamophobia at the national, global and comparative levels. Completion of this seminar meets the writing requirements of the Faculty of Law. Notes: Space is limited and registration is on a first-come, basis. Western State seeks to promote the development of law students as lawyers throughout law school. When professors bring examples from their practical legal experience to the classroom, they engage their students and illustrate how theory comes together in practice. These exercises provide a perspective outside of the standard case teaching method to help students understand the law and its application, and prepare for the day-to-day reality of legal practice.
